![]() The Vanessa interface keeps her mired in the worst of her grief, and it is ironic Vanessa’s death takes Bailey down a path of dishonesty, given that Vanessa was keeping a whopper of a heartbreaking secret from Bailey. ![]() Those actions, combined with her inability to see how much people are trying to help her through her mourning, make Bailey a frustrating but also deeply sympathetic character. Bailey ignores the fact that one of her moms said this tech wasn’t ready for use yet, rationalizes stealing phones so she can mine the data, and even lies to Vanessa’s parents to get their daughter’s laptop, sure it will have even more information. ![]() After her best friend Vanessa dies, Bailey believes she has found the solution to her grief: creating a chat bot or digital interface of Vanessa, loaded up with all the data Bailey can gather (texts, letters, emails). ![]()

Rachman takes us into the minds, self-doubts, and insecurities of the newspaper world, but finds it difficult to get underneath the characters’ skins. Anyone who has ever spent time in newspaperland will recognise The Imperfectionists high degree of authenticity. Then there is the novel's faint yet persistent resemblance to Joshua Ferris's And So We Came to the End, much of whose obliquity and ground-down communal spirit it shares. At the same time there are drawbacks to the short-story-collection-as-novel form, particularly one set around a newspaper, where the metaphorical tide can sometimes sweep in a little too violently for comfort. All this is played out with – in most cases – a fair degree of subtlety. To move his story forwards, Rachman offers 11 representative figures, whose personal lives are intimately connected to the paper's slow decline. If Tom Rachman's first novel has a flagrant drawback, it's that his account of some of the tribulations facing the modern newspaper man (and woman) is unlikely to send any wide-eyed recruits scampering towards what on this evidence is a deeply neurotic profession. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Given the sheer endless amount of specialized literature on Nabokov's work, the author decided to in this paper focus on the question of 'genius' in The Gift and on its main protagonist's most important external influences. In this paper, the author moreover intends to show that both Fyodor's mysterious rival Koncheyev as well as Fyodor's equally artistic and art-loving girlfriend Zina, who also acts as her boyfriend's muse and guiding spirit, play a vital role in the course of Fyodor's artistic maturation which – in a sort of plot twist at the end of The Gift – culminates in him finally becoming a, and revealing his, true genius by writing an extraordinary novel. After a short introduction to the author of The Gift, Vladimir Nabokov, and a summary of the novel's plot, the author of this paper gives an overview on the differences between the 'genius' in Romantic literature (through the example of Pushkin's Mozart and Salieri) and the 'genius' as it is described in Nabokov's world and works. ĭuring the course of the novel, the reader learns about Fyodor's struggles and setbacks on his poetic journey towards success. In his last Russian-language novel The Gift ( Дар), "a novel about love and literary growth", Vladimir Nabokov tells the story of Fyodor, an aspiring poet, the development of the young Russian émigré's literary gift and the revelation of his status as a genius. The teleological intuition of genius is the perception of something beyond words. 4.1 Koncheyev: necessary corrective and semi-doubleĤ.2 Zina: inspiring muse and ideal reader ![]() ![]() Kell is not trusted by the people of Red London.
