The simple black and white pictures add to the book’s charm, and each story is an ideal length for parents to read at bedtime, or for 8–9 year olds to read to themselves. The whole book is set in a recognisable Wales – Cardiff and Tenby are visited – making it a book which clearly delights in its setting. The stories, though written in English, contain a smattering of Welsh, which is translated for non-Welsh speakers. Betsi and Emyr visit a Victorian school, go to a rugby match, dress up for a party and head off to the seaside. The five stories all stand alone, though they share the same characters – two children and their grandparents. This is the second collection of stories about Betsi Wyn, her family and friends, following on from the award-winning Welsh Cakes and Custard.
